Colorado Quality Standard 6: English Language Development Blog
My blog, ELL Differentiation for the Secondary Environment, demonstrates an ongoing inquiry into how to enhance achievement levels among secondary English Learners. The blog contains reviews of several scholarly articles discussing the many ways in which a high school can work towards higher achievement. From family communication to teaching strategies, the blog covers it all. The blog also contains reflections on the same topics that relate the articles to my experience teaching English as a second language and supporting students to boost achievement.
ELL Differentiation for the Secondary Environment demonstrates a constant research process and development of techniques that will boost student learning and heighten academic achievement (Element A). The blog shares multiple ways in which I can affect change in my high school environment towards high levels of academic achievement for all students. Additionally, the blog includes necessary life skills that we need to teach our students in order to demonstrate workforce readiness. I have shared the blog and my portfolio with my students and in turn taught them the skills necessary to construct such blogs and websites. This displays one of the many postsecondary skills students will need in order to be employable in our technology-driven society (Element B).
Regularly writing blog posts has helped me stop and reflect upon what I have learned or read. It has assisted me in formulating how I can implement new skills and information into my classroom and given me a medium through which to share the information. Through sharing my blog, students have seen that learning is a lifelong process, and that their teacher is also a student. They have seen that I am still striving to be a better teacher, which brings a certain level of respect. Additionally, students have seen that there are many ways to demonstrate learning and that simply turning in assignments doesn’t always mean that learning has taken place. It is my goal to continue my blog after the graduate requirements have ended, as it is a great way to keep up on research and summarize findings.
