Philosophy of Education
What is the purpose of education?
While it seems a silly question, it has been one of the most central questions throughout history. In my mind, the purpose of education is to arm the students of today with the ability to think independently, make their own opinions, and continue the journey of self-improvement and discovery throughout life. It is for students to ask their own questions – to understand the difference between the knowledge they have and what they do not yet know. Then, the aim is for students to independently determine an appropriate path to understanding the desired information. The ultimate purpose of education is to teach students to ask questions and become self-directed learners with a hunger for knowledge.
What is the teacher’s role?
I believe teaching is a profession for life-long learners who strive to inspire the love of learning and creating in all students, regardless of age. It is the teacher’s duty to maintain high standards and expectations for both herself and the student. The teacher is responsible for delivering quality instruction with mastery in his or her subject. The teacher’s job is also to help the student find his or her personal goal and strive for it daily until the objective has been accomplished.
How and what will I teach?
Inclusion is a central aim to my teaching practice, as it is also central to life outside of the school institution. I believe that instilling the values of inclusion and tolerance within our students is vital for our future society. Teaching our next generation of citizens to include all humans, no matter how culturally, linguistically, or educationally diverse, is essential to humanity. I seek to illustrate how we can break barriers and make instruction accessible to all students on a daily basis.
I will teach persistence, hard work, and the feeling of success. It is essential that students learn these skills daily, as these experiences will make a lasting impact. I will also teach students to work collaboratively. Collaboration is a skill all productive adults need, and I intend to have students work in pairs and groups daily towards a common goal of a supportive learning community.
Our world is the best classroom. I believe in teaching language, literacy, and content through authentic situations and current events. I believe in taking learning outside of the classroom and experiencing important lessons in alternative settings to enable student creativity and connections.
As a teacher I will constantly invest in relationships with my students. I know that students learn best when they are comfortable. I will attempt to create a welcoming classroom environment based around respect of one another and our differences. In this environment students will learn to respect others into adulthood and understand the importance of relationships.
I will also invest in relationships with parents, coaches, faculty, and the community as a whole. Raising young adults truly does take a village. This collaboration is responsible for bringing wise, responsible, and kind youth into adulthood. I will strive daily to collaborate with my colleagues in order to assist our students and create the independent thinkers of tomorrow.
In order to create the independent, questioning thinkers of tomorrow, I aim to include the entirety of this philosophy into my daily practice. As a teacher, I will strive daily to find the best in every student and then push them a little bit further to become his or her personal best.
