Colorado Quality Standard 3: Reading Internship
I completed a reading internship with our building's literacy specialist during the fall semester of this school year. I met regularly with my mentor and observed her lessons weekly. She shared teaching methods and resources, and even kept me up to date on academic articles in the reading world. I gained a plethora of information through this process and am extremely grateful to have such an amazing reading teacher in our school. This mentor teacher continues to guide me in creating a reading and writing lab for the high school next year.
Completing this internship has given me a look into someone else's classroom, which all teachers should do regularly. I was able to keep current with new literature in the reading world and discuss concepts and practices with my mentor teacher (Element A). This internship also helped me implement effective practices I had learned into my own classroom (Element C). Additionally, the way in which my mentor teacher conducts class taught me how to establish and communicate high expectations that help students develop critical thinking skills (Element E). The internship also reinforced the practice of posting learning objectives daily (Element G). Lastly, through this internship I was able to sit in on assessments and discover the differences among readingassessments (Element H).
This internship was a great snapshot of another teaching assignment, one that I will be stepping into next fall. The experience helped me find resources to help students strengthen their literacy skills and also continually assess progress. I really respected my mentor teacher's communication style with students and definitely took away some communication and leadership skills simply from watching her at work. I am now in the practice of pausing regularly while reading to discuss key points or comments with students to deepen their understanding. Working with this mentor teacher reminded me that we all have our own teaching style, but it is beneficial to step into someone else's classroom from time to time, as there is always more to learn.
