Colorado Quality Standard 5: Research Project
I have conducted an action research project this semester investigating teacher attitudes towards English Learners, teaching techniques, and the English Language Development program as a whole. Through this research, I have surveyed teacher practices within the classroom an individually interviewed all teachers about their views on the ELD program at the high school. This research has given me the opportunity to sit down and discuss our English Learners and the environment we create with my colleagues. Many options for future planning and professional development have come out of this research.
The action research I have been conducting demonstrates leadership within the school (Element A). I have been collecting data from colleagues in order to further the program and include all faculty members in the process. Through the interviews, I have shared knowledge and skills with my fellow teachers (Element B); my colleagues have also shared practices with me. This research has put me in the driver’s seat to continue improvement in our English Language Development program.
The experience of conducting research has empowered me and given me more confidence in a leadership position. I have gathered anonymous information on classroom practices and also had the opportunity to speak with each of our faculty members. Fully understanding each faculty member’s perspective and unique ideas truly enables me to create a program that will be beneficial to all. The program still has much development to come, but the information I have gathered will be invaluable as we move forward.
