Colorado Quality Standard 2: Progress Reports
I communicate with parents regularly, and quarterly with progress reports. I speak to parents daily on the phone and parents also stop in to talk to me at school. After every quarter, our department has started sending home progress reports in the areas of language development. I try to make it clear to all parents that I am available whenever they have questions or concerns, which has greatly improved communication increased trust and communication between myself and parents.
Regular communication and the use of progress reports strengthen my relationship with my students and their parents (Element E). When students know that I am in regular contact with their parents, and that the parents trust me, we are able to accomplish much more academically. My ability to communicate with parents also helps them trust the school system and feel that they are “in the loop” with what happens at school.
Communicating with parents continually has improved my practice and helped me reflect on myself as a teacher. I struggled with family communication at first, as I didn’t know how much communication parents needed at a high school level. What I have come to find is that it simply depends on the parents. All parents appreciate quarterly check-ins, but some parents want more consistent communication. Since I speak Spanish, I am able to provide the higher level of communication that some parents desire.
